Five Things To Check If Your Furnace Goes Out

The cold weather is here and feeling warm and comfortable is everyone’s top priority for getting through the cold winter season, but what can you do when the furnace stops working?

1) Check your thermostat

a) Be sure there is power to your thermostat. If it is battery operated, change the batteries. If it is a digital thermostat and there is no display, there may not be power to either the thermostat or the furnace.

b) Is the thermostat set to the HEAT position? If your unit also serves as your cooling unit or if your kids may have touched it, the setting may have been changed.

c) Make sure the thermostat is set higher than the current room temperature.

2) Make sure there is power to the furnace

a) See 1a above. If there is no power to your thermostat there may not be power to your furnace.

b) If you have a fan setting on your thermostat try turning the fan to “ON” to test for power to the

c) Check your electrical panel for tripped breakers or blown fuses. Reset the breakers or replace any blown fuses and try again.

3) Check to see if your furnace filter needs to be changed.
Furnace filters should be changed about once a month. If the filter is clogged, not enough air will flow through.  This will significantly reduce the efficiency of your unit.

4) Is your propane or fuel oil tank empty?
Call your fuel provider to come and check your tank.

5) Check the Condensate Pan
High-efficiency furnaces will pull enough heat out of the air that water will condense and drip down into a pan. If the reservoir in the condensate plan is full or the drain line to the pump is clogged, the heating system will not turn on.  Drain the reservoir and check to see if the pump is working properly.

If you’ve checked everything above and your furnace is still not turning on or heating properly, it is a good time to give the heating professionals at Wulf Brothers a call. We can inspect your entire system and determine what is causing the performance problems with your furnace.
